At noon, I attended a cremation of a highly respected monk. This monk was respected in the community of Chiang Mai. After his passing, he had been placed in a large elephant statue and has been there for eight moths for all to offer respect. On this day, December 27th, they had the ceremony whereby large ropes were attached to the front of the elephant and extended in front for approximately 200 feet. Various members of the community would hold onto the ropes and pull the large elephant, on wheels, over three and a half miles to the Cremation site. Along the way there were various groups of people standing on the side showing their respect for the passing of this Monk. There were dignitaries being carried by other people and musicians playing in the front of the procession. This procession continued for three and a half miles on a very hot day. Some of the local businesses closed their doors and stood on the side of the street offering drinks to all those that were part of the procession. I had many offers of drinks as well from these kind and generous community members.
