Foundations of the Ancient City ...
If you are energetic, this is an excellent place to hike around as the ruins are spread out quite a bit. From beginning to end I walked over 20km to see these ruins. Using the maps.me site on my Android it was a blessing as it pointed out every single ruin which prevented any backtracking. If you have never used this Maps.me before, what I like about it is that you do not need WiFi to use. If you do not wish to walk as much this is not an issue as there are Tuk-tuk’s that will drive you around the area. If you get dropped off at the Wiang Kum Kam Information Center there are various forms of transportation that will take you around to see some of the main ruins. I wanted to visit as many of the sites as possible and not just the main touristic ones thus I opted to walk around. It was not that far from the Chiang Mai city centre and that was included in the 20km that I walked.
For a little history, King Mangrai had built the original site for Chiang Mai in this location. After much building and years later, it became evident that this was not a great site for the capital due to the flooding that occurred in this region. The city location was moved to where the present Chiang Mai city is located. It is a short distance away and is a little higher in elevation.
Wiang Kum Kam is the name of this area and the ruins within. My intent is to take you on my foot journey and therefore have placed the stops I had made in sequence.
