Piikani Pow Wow - Amazing Event!

August 14, 2019

Today, my great friend Pierina and I visited the Brocket Reserve, Piikani, for the PowWow. We first went to the morning breakfast which was free. They had pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs and fruit. Quite a nice spread I must say.

We had to wait until 1 pm for the events to start and it was only 11am. We took a drive around Pincher Station and had a few laughs along the way.

We then visited the dancers and drummers for their opening ceremony. It was so nice to see so many dancers of all ages. I was here in the 1970's and this is by far the most young dancers I have seen. The native traditions are live and well, so glad to see.

We then visited the Indian Relay Races. I have always wanted to see them, but for various reasons it never happened. This was so awesome to witness! To watch how they run and jump off one horse onto the next and then to ride bareback is a must to witness.

We then visited some booths that were about drug awareness. This was very interesting and informative. We were trained in using a nose spray if we should come across someone that is close to being unconscious and have the symptoms of someone that may have overdosed.

We went back into the building to watch some of the competitive dancers. The drummers, singing and dancers were very spiritual.

Before leaving we went back over to the rodeo grounds and watched a couple of the bronco rides.

Got some nice shots of this.

This was such a great day!
