Exit Glacier - A "Cool" Hike.

July 24

Got up early and visited a nearby waterfall just on the outskirts of town. A nice waterfall and road goes right beside it.

I drove to the end of the road to see if there were any whales or other sealife around … none that I could see. The clouds were low today and water calm, so thought there would be a great deal of sea life around.

I drove out to the Exit Glacier, it is one of the very few glaciers that you can walk up to. I drove the 8km to the parking lot and then walked the 1.5km hike in to see it, it was very nice. Quite a few people here for being this early in the morning.

I went back to town and parked the car near the campgrounds. I walked over to where they have a variety of monuments commemorating various individuals or groups. The iditarod was mile “0” in Seward.

In 1895 a network of trails were formed before Steward became a community. The Iditarod trail linked various remote communities and delivered mail on this route originally by dogsled.

In 1903, Steward became a town. Eventually gold shipments were carried via dogsleds between Iditarod and Steward starting in 1910.

After a little while, I drove around town to see some of the old buildings. The brochure talked about these old buildings and some of them are no longer there, it just talked about them. This was a short trip.

I went back to the campsite and packed it in early as I plan on leaving before 6:30am.
