All Landscapes in One! Snowcapped Mountains - Glaciers - Waterfalls Galore!

July 25, 2018

This morning I was up, packed and on the road by 6:00am. This was a long day in driving as I am leaving Seward and hoping to make it all the way to Valdez, this was going to be at least an 8.5hour drive. This doesn’t include all the stops in between.

My first stop was in Moose Pass, there was an old mill water wheel. There was an amusing sign that read, “The people are nice in Moose Pass, if you have an axe … grind it here.” That is just what I did. I took my axe out and sharpened it. This was a really neat thing to see.

I then planned on stopping in Portage to find out where the old Portage site was located before they relocated, so I could take some photo’s there. The Info Center was not opened yet and I kept on going.

I continued on my way and stopped to take a few photo’s of a cow and calf moose. They were certainly skittish. I parked the car at the first pull-off and had to walk back about ¾ of a mile. The cow moose spotted me at quite a distance and started to head back into the bush. Oh well, good morning exercise. LOL

Driving north to Anchorage, the road has many pull-outs and nice scenery. I stopped a few times to take photo’s as the clouds were quite interesting.

I stopped at Potters Marsh to see if there were any birds to take photo’s of. Apparently, there are over 250 different species of birds that stop in this marsh. There were only a few ducks and sea gulls this morning.

Made it to Anchorage, fuelled up and went to WalMart to top up groceries for the next few days. Had a hard time getting out of Anchorage as the main road seems to end and there were no signs to indicate which way to go. A part of this road was under construction and perhaps this had a great deal to do with that.

Nice drive in many of the parts of the Glenn Highway. Didn’t see any wildlife, but the scenery was very nice.

The scenery changes quite drastically a few miles after turning south from Glennalen. In the two hour drive from Glennallen to Valdez I observed many mountains completely covered in snow, others snow-capped, some barren mountains as you drive over the summit and then you see many glaciers, waterfalls and lakes. Quite a variety of landscape features in such a short drive. It was very impressive and a place that is certainly worth a visit.
