I truly thought I was going to have a wonderful night sleep as I was on a backroad with minimal traffic, away from trains and airports. Well, luck would have it, I had a family move in next to my tent site. It was around 12:30am and the mother was cursing a storm and speaking so loud that you could hear echoes. They had the vehicle running for over half an hour and I thought maybe they were stuck. At 1am I got up and went outside to see what was going on. The mother saw me and fell silent … I asked the father if everything was okay and he did not answer. I hollered, “Hey! Is everything okay?” He said yes and was carrying a little one into their tent who I believe was sound asleep. I went back to bed.
The next morning, I heard the kids start chatting LOUDLY at around 5:30am. They did not stop. I eventually got up at 6:15am and started to make breakfast. I looked over when a young lad started hollering to his siblings, “Look! I am up here!” He was standing on top of their mobile camping unit. Apparently, the parents thought it would be a great idea to put all four children (the oldest being around 15) in the tent while they slept in the comfort of their mobile camper.
I continued to make breakfast when I the oldest lad started to get sick by the camper. I asked him if he was okay. He eventually replied he was okay … still no parents. At about 9am the father comes strolling out of the camper and is talking to the kids. He started a fire for them and went back into the camper … he came out and told them to keep the noise down. HaHaHa … keep the noise down at 9am … nice. LOL
After breakfast, I drove into town and parked by the Information Center. I walked down to the marsh, Beluga Slough, to see if the Sandhill Cranes would be around. They were not, but I ran into a lovely couple from Florida. While talking, I noticed a large set of Moose prints that had recently gone through the area. We talked for quite awhile and then went on our separate ways. I drove up onto Homer Spit Road and on a side road by Freight Dock Road. There was a steel piling in the water and an eagles nest could be seen from the shoreline. It was a great spot because you were standing above the nest looking down. There was one baby eagle. I was taking my camera out when a huge bald eagle came flying in and landing on the nest … damn missed a great shot.
Took quite a few pics of the baby eagle being fed regurgitated food. After about half an hour of watching and taking photo’s, I headed back to the campsite for a late lunch.
About 4pm, the tide was on its way out and I made my way to the beach in Anchor Point. When the tide is mostly out there are plenty of eagles that are around at this time. Well, I was not disappointed a lot of eagles and seagulls. I managed to snap a few pics. LOL
After about a couple of hours, I went back to the campsite and had a great campfire. Got ready for the evening entertainment and I was not disappointed … the neighbours from hell were in great form. The mother was cursing at her kids every 5 minutes … a one point she would be yelling a blue streak and the next she would be laughing. They had their generator going all afternoon and finally shut it off at 9:20pm. It was quite amusing to listen to while I lay in my tent reading. It wasn’t amusing when they turned the generator back on after midnight. Let’s just say that I spoke their language and got them to turn the damn thing off. What gets me though is that they have 5 kids in a little tent while they sleep in a big mobile RV. The great thing about camping is these kind of “neighbours” are only temporary. HaHaHa I have to admit it was very entertaining though.
