This morning I slept in until almost 9am! Wow! That is unusual for me … must be the fresh air.
After a hardy breakfast, I headed to the ferry and made my way to the Information Centre to catch up on most of the blogs.
I was hoping to finish posting blogs around 12:00 pm, but due to slow internet at times it took me until 2:30pm to get done what I was hoping to do. Now, for the rest of the day, I have planned to visit the Dawson City cemeteries ... and there are many.
This is not something that most people would do or think of doing, but I decided to visit specific sites that matched with some interesting stories which I will post together. I found them very interesting to say the least.
The first cemetery that I visited was Father William S. Judge, known as “The Saint of Dawson”. His grave is located behind what was the church and the hospital he founded.
The Third Avenue Cemetery was very difficult to find. It was not clearly marked and if it wasn’t for the help of a local yound lady, I would never have found it. This cemetery was the first cemetery in Dawson City. Most of the graves are no longer clearly marked and are overgrown with trees, but some of the graves are not identifiable.
When the downtown cemetery became full, another cemetery was developed outside of town on the hill called, Hillside Cemeteries. This site is interesting because they do not blend the cemeteries together into one cemetery, it was actually 9 cemeteries beside each other.
There was the New Catholic Cemetery, The St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Yukon Order of Pioneers Dome Cemetery, Hillside Cemetery, Police Cemetery, Jewish Cemetery, Fraternal Order of Eagles Cemetery, New Public Cemetery, Masonic Cemetery and Another Hillside Cemetery.
I have selected specific headstones from most of these different cemeteries with what I think are very interesting stories related to those who are buried on these sites.
When I crossed back over the river via the ferry, I decided I would go check out the panoramic view of Dawson City, the weather seemed to be perfect for it. It was a little late in the day for what I was looking for, but the photos turned out pretty good.
Back to camp and a late supper … I was so busy today that I forgot to eat lunch. How time flies when you are having fun. LOL
