Left campsite at 7am and made my way to the Yukon!
Just a short distance outside of Liard Hot Springs Provincial Park I saw a bear.
Stopped and took a few pics. From the time I left the campsite to the time I arrived at Watson’s Lake, Yukon Territory, I had seen 9 bear and 4 wood buffalo. The wood buffalo were huge! Most of the bears were black bears and I believe one of them was a brown bear.
When I arrived at Watson’s Lake I stopped at the sign forest. This was quite a unique place filled with signs from all around the world. It all started with a US Army Soldier placed a sign up here in 1942 of his home town … when they were putting the road through. The number of signs has grown ever since and as of the end of September, 2016 there were almost 84, 000 signs! Imagine that!
I went into the Yukon Information Center and the ladies were very helpful. Got all the information I needed and sat on the bench outside to send a quick message via FaceBook as they have WiFi. While sitting on the bench a lady who was camping at Liard Hot Springs Campgrounds arrived. She informed me that she had run out of gas just outside of Watson’s Lake and a nice elderly gentleman stopped to help her out. This is not a place you want to ignore your gas gauge. Well, after finishing my quick update on FB, I was on my way. I got gas across the street and it was only 1.45! I was so glad to see it was not going to be 1.95 like the last place I stopped at. This gas station had a grocery store inside and was loaded with many items. Prices were reasonable.
I continued my drive and stopped at Rancheria Falls Recreation Site. It was a short walk to the falls and they were okay, but not outstanding. Doesn’t matter, I still enjoy seeing new waterfalls.
I continued on another hour and a half to Teslin Lake Government Campground. There were only a few plots left when I got here at 3:30pm. Many people drove through the campground trying to find one, but it filled up fast by 4pm. Afterall, it is only $12.00 per night! This is the price for all the government campsites in the Yukon … BONUS!!!
Makes up for the price of the gas. HaHaHa No showers, but beautiful sites … certainly living like the prospectors that went through here in days of old … it is an amazing feeling though … romanticism. Most people driving through are in trailers or large units. I have observed that there are only a very few of us that camp in tents. LOL
