Sites to See South of Punta Arenas

Got up this morning and picked up the car at 10:00am. Was a very quick process, but I took my time to read the small print. It turns out that insurance is a little different here. To rent a car if there are any dings, chips in window, etc. it would cost me a sum of money to start and they pay the remainder. I didn’t like this, but picked up the car anyway. When checking the car over, we did a thorough inspection of the car, and when he gave me my copy it was blank. I asked him to fill it out.

Got on the road and headed to Fuerte Bulnes. Along the way, I found more ships that had been abandoned. I stopped to take a few photos.

Also, found a few interesting birds that I had to take a few snaps of.

Sixty kilometres later, I arrive at Fuerte Bulnes. This was a very interesting site. You drive to a building by a gate and pay the entrance fee. You show the ticket at the gate and they take off part of your stub. Next, you drive about 1km and go through a wooden gateway.

In another km, you stop at an information place that gives you the history of the fort. Once finished here, you drive 2km to reach the actual fort. It was quite nicely rebuilt.

After visiting Fuerte Bulnes, I traveled down another road to the end and started the hike to Faro San Isidro. I walked about 2.5 km before I turned around. I was concerned about the tide coming in … I was pretty certain that I would not be able to make it to the lighthouse and back to the parking lot without getting caught in some places wading through water.

Also, it was already after 5pm when I got to the point of deciding to turn around (even though it doesn’t get dark until after 10:30pm). It looked amazing, though … if I have time at the end of the car rental, I would like to come back and do the hike all the way to the lighthouse.

I slowly made my way back into Punta Arenas, checking out the various sites along the way.
