December 15th, my brother and I got up at 7 in the morning and headed to the Crowsnest Pass. We were making our journey three waterfalls. Rainbow Waterfalls, Nerz Perce Creek was the first stop. From the parking lot we did walk along the stream crossed a bridge and made our way up to beautiful waterfall. The thing that amazes me was the temperature was warm I was surprised of how much ice was on the river and especially on the waterfall. We took a lot of pictures along the brook of various patterns of ice that were formed in the holes that were showing where the water was running through. There were ice Globes on and of icicles which were quite impressive.
We then made our way to Star Creek. Again, there were some amazing patterns that have formed on the openings over the stream that created some amazing icescapes. Close to the waterfall, which was round a bend, we needed to cross the stream to continue the short distance to see the waterfall. In order to get there we had to cross on an icy log. Well, with these wobbly long legs and my clutzy moves on ice, I could not attempt to make the crossing. Charlie did continue the short distance crossing the river of the stream and saw that the waterfalls were not as impressive as where we had stopped. I'm wondering if Charlie was just trying to make me feel better because I didn't get any further up the river. LOL
We then proceeded to Crowsnest Lake. The lake was frozen over and was extremely smooth. Certainly worthy of a couple of photos. On the east side of the lake we drove down a gravel road to an old abandoned dance hall. The old dance hall was in ruins, but it certainly must have been quite an impressive place to visit back in the day.
We stopped for lunch in Blairmore for a sandwich and then proceeded on our way to Crowsnest River near Frank Slide. Well, from the road it did not look like much, but once we walked over the rocks down to the riverbank was a completely different photo story ... so beautiful.
Our last stop for the evening was at Lunbreck Falls. I don't know what I was expecting but it certainly wasn't to see a winter wonderland with such beautiful weather that southern Alberta was having. The icescapes on the waterfalls were absolutely stunning. Not only did we enjoy the view from above on the platform but we walked down the stairs and went along the cliff by the river to take some additional shots.
Another incredible day! As I said yesterday, what a great way to start my travels.
